The construction of Astana in the center of the country has become the pivot point for the development of entire Kazakhstan. Today the capital city is the largest megapolis. It is a transport, communication, and logistics hub, which has become the transit bridge between Europe and Asia.
President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev decreed to declare the city of Aqmola the capital of the country starting from December 10, 1997. All government bodies and ministries moved to the new capital. After long discussions, on May 6, 1998 it was decided to rename the city into Astana which in Kazakh means the ‘capital city’. Over the 21 years the face of the city as well as its economic development have changed dramatically. Business, construction and trade are booming in the Kazakh capital.
